Gentoo Penguin

Pygoscelis papua

The gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) is a medium-sized penguin of subantarctic islands and the Antarctic Peninsula region, recognized by the white stripe over the eye and a bright orange bill. It is a strong swimmer that feeds on krill, fish, and squid, often nesting in colonies on ice-free ground. Pairs build pebble nests and may return to the same breeding areas, though local conditions can shift with snow, predators, and food supply.

Aquariums and zoos keep gentoo penguins in chilled saltwater habitats with clean pools, dry nesting space, controlled lighting, and careful air and water quality. Pebbles are more than decoration during breeding because pairs use them to build and maintain nests. Keepers monitor feet, feathers, waterproofing, weight, molt, and fish intake, with vitamins supplied through the diet. Field conservation watches colony counts, fisheries overlap, avian disease, climate shifts, and tourist disturbance, especially where breeding sites are easy for visitors to approach.
