Fischer's Lovebird
Agapornis fischeri
Fischer's lovebird is a small orange-faced parrot from north-central Tanzania. Agapornis fischeri lives in wooded grassland south and east of Lake Victoria, much of it in and around the Serengeti, and in the wild it sometimes crosses with the masked lovebird. Adults are 13 to 15 cm long and weigh 42 to 58 g, with an orange-red face, olive-green head, yellow neck and upper breast, a blue rump, a red bill and a white eye-ring. Lilian's lovebird has a similar face but a green rump, and the masked lovebird has a dark head.
Unlike the peach-faced lovebird, Fischer's lovebird is on CITES Appendix II, and it is listed as Near Threatened, with trapping for the pet trade among the reasons. Tanzania now has a zero quota for commercial export of wild birds, and importing Fischer's lovebirds into the US needs a Wild Bird Conservation Act permit, so ask sellers for breeding and origin records. It is common in aviculture. Recorded lifespans range from a verified 12.6 years in AnAge to 15 to 20 years in World Parrot Trust guidance. Give it a flight cage at least 1.2 m long, a small-seed mix with fruit and greens, and room to climb and bathe.
