Unknown Breed
An unknown-breed Fischer's lovebird is a bird whose variety, mutation line, or parentage has not been recorded. The species, Agapornis fischeri, is one of the African eye-ring lovebirds, compact and stocky with a short tail and strong pair-bonding behavior. Wild-type birds are green with a warm orange face and yellowish upper breast, while captive birds may appear blue, lutino, pied, white, violet or sea-green, making visual identification of genetic background difficult.
When taking in or buying an unknown bird, treat the label as missing history rather than a defect. Age, sex, health, temperament, and evidence of tameness are usually more useful for everyday care than a variety name. A veterinarian can help with baseline checks and DNA sexing if needed. Breeders should be cautious, because recessive colors and past hybridization with related lovebirds may not show outwardly; unknown-line birds are best kept as companions or bred only with clear disclosure.
