Dumbo Ear
Dumbo ear guppies are fancy Poecilia reticulata selected for enlarged pectoral fins that spread like small fans beside the gills. The name is a hobby nickname; the fish do not have ears, and the trait is really about fin size, shape, and placement. Pectoral fins may be white, blue, red, black, or patterned, and the dumbo trait is commonly combined with mosaic, koi, dragon, half-black, or albino strains. When the fins are even and broad, a displaying male seems to paddle as he courts.
Because the pectoral fins are part of the display, these guppies should be kept away from fin-nipping tankmates and strong current. They use the same warm, stable, mineral-rich water as other fancy guppies, with open areas where males can turn without snagging fins. Not every fry in a line will show equal pectoral size, so breeding programs select for symmetry, active swimming, and pectoral color as well as tail quality. Avoid fish that clamp one pectoral fin or struggle to hold position in calm water.
