Half-Black
Half-black fancy guppies, often shortened to HB guppies, are Poecilia reticulata strains with a dark rear section of the body, usually beginning around mid-body and extending toward the caudal peduncle. The front half remains lighter or patterned, and the tail may be blue, red, yellow, green, pastel, or another selected color. The look overlaps with tuxedo-type guppies in casual trade, but show breeders usually value a crisp black area with good contrast. Males display the most dramatic body and fin color, though females in strong lines may show a gray to black rear body.
Care is the same as for other fancy guppies: stable warm water, steady feeding, and protection from fin-nipping tankmates matter more than the color pattern. For breeders, the challenge is keeping the black coverage even without letting it muddy the head or wash out the tail color. Half-black genes interact strongly with other color traits, so outcrosses can produce attractive but less predictable fry. Buying from a line labeled half-black blue, half-black red, or another specific combination is usually more useful than buying an assorted HB fish.
