Eurasian Collared Dove

Streptopelia decaocto

The Eurasian Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto) is a slender, medium-sized bird that is easily recognizable by its soft, sandy-gray plumage and distinctive black crescent-shaped collar on the nape of its neck. Originating from the Subcontinent and Middle East, this adaptable species has successfully expanded its range across Europe and into North America, often inhabiting urban areas, farmlands, and open woodlands.

Measuring about 32 centimeters in length, these doves have a streamlined body, long tail, and slightly pinkish hue on their breast and belly, which is set off by darker-colored eyes and a delicate black bill. Their flight is smooth and direct, characterized by swift wingbeats and graceful glides. The Eurasian Collared Dove is known for its calm, cooing song—a rhythmic "coo-COO-coo"—and its capability to breed throughout the year under favorable conditions.

Social by nature, these birds often form small flocks outside the breeding season. Their diet mainly consists of seeds and grains, supplemented occasionally with fruits and greens. This species has shown remarkable resilience and adaptability, allowing it to thrive in diverse environments across its extensive range.
