Mixed Breed

Mixed breed is an informal label for a Eurasian collared dove whose color background or captive ancestry is not narrow enough to name as a single variety. The wild species, Streptopelia decaocto, spread naturally and through human-altered landscapes across much of Europe and has also established populations elsewhere. It is usually buff grey with a black nape collar, dark wingtips, and pale tail corners, while aviary birds may also be white, pied, or albino.

For private keepers and rescues, mixed breed status mainly affects identification and breeding decisions. These doves need a safe flight cage or aviary, dry shelter, a seed-and-grain diet, fresh water, and calcium grit, with pairs monitored because they can nest repeatedly. Where the species is introduced or regulated, origin matters; escaped or surplus birds should not be turned loose. A mixed bird can be suitable for a non-breeding aviary, but it should not be represented as verified wild-type Eurasian collared dove.

Colors: Albino, Pied, White, Wild Type (Buff Grey)
