Mixed Variety
A mixed variety electric yellow cichlid is a Labidochromis caeruleus kept without a single named strain, locality, or stable color-line assignment. In aquariums the name usually refers to yellow or pale white fish descended from mixed captive stock, rather than to a formally recognized breed. Electric yellows are Lake Malawi mbuna with lemon-yellow bodies, black-edged fins in many adults, and a milder temperament than many rock-dwelling Malawi cichlids. Mixed labels can also appear when records do not separate domestic strains from fish of uncertain ancestry.
For keepers, the label matters mainly for breeding plans. A mixed-variety fish can make a hardy display animal, but it should not be sold as a pure locality line or used in conservation-minded breeding. They need hard, alkaline water, rockwork with broken sight lines, and a quality mbuna diet supplemented with modest protein. Females are maternal mouthbrooders, so breeders who want predictable fry usually separate compatible groups and avoid housing similar Labidochromis or yellow mbuna that could confuse identification.
