Eastern Grey Kangaroo

Eastern Grey Kangaroo

Macropus giganteus

The Eastern Grey Kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) is a prominent marsupial native to the eastern and southern regions of Australia. Renowned for their impressive size, adult males can reach a height of up to 2 meters (6.6 feet) and weigh around 66 kilograms (145 pounds). Females are generally smaller. Characterized by their soft, grey-brown fur with a paler belly, these kangaroos are herbivorous grazers, predominantly feeding on grasses and shrubs. Eastern Grey Kangaroos possess powerful hind legs and strong tails, which aid in their iconic bounding locomotion and are crucial for maintaining balance. Social by nature, they often form groups called mobs, which provide protection and enhance foraging efficiency. Typically found in open grasslands, woodlands, and forested areas, they have adapted well to both inland and coastal environments. This species is an integral part of Australian ecosystems and cultural heritage, playing a key role in maintaining the balance of their habitat.
