Standard
Standard discus is a broad trade label for discus fish that are not being sold as a rare morph, imported wild form, or specialized line. In this context the fish is a round, laterally compressed Symphysodon discus type, with emphasis on even body shape, balanced fins, clear eyes, and healthy coloration rather than on one named pattern. Depending on the source, standard stock may include common strains such as royal blue, red turquoise, blue turquoise, pigeon blood, snake skin, red melon, or blue diamond.
Choosing standard discus is often about condition and stability rather than chasing a label. Look for alert fish with full bodies, smooth breathing, and a willingness to feed, and quarantine new arrivals because discus can be sensitive to parasites and water changes. Captive-bred fish usually tolerate a wider range of mineral content than wild imports, but they still need warm, clean, low-stress aquariums. Breeders should pair for health, shape, fertility, and consistent fry growth before treating a line as show-quality stock.
