Mixed Variety
Mixed variety discus are discus cichlids sold without a single stable color-strain identity, often because their parents came from different ornamental lines. The name may be applied to Symphysodon discus in a broad aquarium context, although many captive discus strains include ancestry from related Symphysodon forms. Mixed young can show elements of pigeon blood, turquoise, leopard, checkerboard, golden, blue diamond, red melon, or spotted lines, and their adult pattern may not be predictable from juvenile color.
These fish are kept for the same reasons as named discus: their round profile, calm schooling behavior, and pair-bonding breeding habits. Success depends on mature filtration, warm stable water, frequent maintenance, and a varied diet offered without fouling the tank. Young discus usually grow best in groups, while breeding pairs need quiet space and very clean water for eggs and mucus-feeding fry. Mixed varieties can be excellent display fish, but sellers should avoid assigning a fashionable strain name unless parentage and offspring consistency support it.
