Crocodile Monitor
Varanus salvadorii
The crocodile monitor is a large, egg-laying tree monitor from New Guinea's rainforests, with a long snout, black body marked by yellow spots and an exceptionally long tail. It is a zoo and advanced specialist animal requiring a very large secure enclosure, robust climbing structure, shelter and controlled tropical conditions.
Its teeth, claws and strength can cause serious injuries; protected management and experienced veterinary support are appropriate. It is a monitor lizard, not a crocodilian, and its name should not be confused with the small Chinese crocodile lizard.
