Ultra is a recessive corn snake gene that reduces dark pigment and is an allele of the same gene as Amelanistic. A snake with two Ultra copies is an Ultra, while one Ultra copy and one Amelanistic copy make the lighter, in-between snake called an Ultramel. Breeder sources say Ultra entered corn snakes through a cross with the gray rat snake.
Corn snakes show Ultra only with two copies. One copy makes a het, which looks normal but can pass Ultra on.
Ultra and Amelanistic are alleles of one gene, so a snake carries at most two copies between them; one of each makes an Ultramel. Breeder sources say Ultra came into corn snakes from a cross with the gray rat snake.
