Candy Cane

Candy cane corn snakes are selectively bred amelanistic corn snakes with a high-white or cream background and distinct red to orange saddles. The name refers to the desired red-on-white contrast, not to a separate simple gene. Most candy cane lines are built on the amel mutation, so they lack black pigment and usually have red eyes, but the amount of white, orange bleeding, and yellow along the neck varies by family. Some animals sold under this name are closer to bright amels, while strong lines keep cleaner contrast into adulthood.

Care follows the same rules as for other captive corn snakes, with extra attention to realistic expectations when buying. Hatchlings can change noticeably as they grow, and photographs under warm lighting may exaggerate the white ground color. A secure enclosure, gentle handling after the snake is feeding, and a normal schedule of thawed mice are more important than keeping the animal display-bright. Breeders working toward candy cane expression usually select the cleanest adults over multiple generations and should describe the line honestly rather than promising identical offspring from every clutch.
