Unclassified Variety
An unclassified variety common molly is a Poecilia sphenops whose appearance has not been matched to a standard aquarium variety or stable strain name. It may be a plain shortfin, a partially black molly, a silver or gold fish with uneven markings, a dalmatian-type cross, or a young fish whose adult color has not settled. The label is especially useful for store, rescue, or hobby records when a fish is healthy but its exact variety is not reliable.
Care decisions should follow the species, not the label. Common mollies do best in warm, hard, alkaline freshwater and may tolerate lightly brackish conditions when tankmates are suitable. They graze algae and plant matter but also need prepared foods and small protein items. Males can pester females, so cover, space, and balanced groups reduce stress. If unclassified fish are bred, offspring should be sold or shared honestly rather than assigned fashionable variety names without evidence.
