Callithrix jacchus

The common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) is a small, New World primate native to the northeastern regions of Brazil. Known for their distinctive white ear tufts, these marmosets exhibit a fine banded coat of gray and black, interspersed with touches of white or yellow fur. Adults typically weigh around 300-500 grams and measure approximately 20 centimeters long, not including their impressively long, bushy tail which often exceeds body length.

These social creatures live in family groups, communicating with each other through vocalizations, facial expressions, and scent markings. The common marmoset's diet is diverse, comprising tree sap, gum, fruits, insects, and small vertebrates, showcasing their adaptability to various ecological niches. They reside predominantly in arboreal habitats, displaying remarkable agility as they maneuver through canopies using their claw-like nails for gripping and balance.

Despite pressures from habitat destruction and the pet trade, common marmosets still flourish in the wild and are notable for thriving in urban areas alongside humans. Their reproductive strategy often involves cooperative breeding, with older siblings assisting in the care of newborns.
