Unknown Strain
An unknown strain cobia is a cobia, Rachycentron canadum, whose hatchery line, broodstock source, or wild population origin has not been recorded. Cobia are large, fast-growing marine fish of warm seas, recognized by a long dark body, flattened head, broad lateral stripe, and pale belly. In farms and research collections, unknown strain does not imply an unusual color morph; it is a provenance label for stock that cannot be tied to a named selective-breeding program or regional line.
For aquaculture, an unknown-strain group is best treated as variable stock until growth rate, disease history, salinity tolerance, and spawning performance are documented on site. Cobia require warm, well-oxygenated marine water, large tanks or net pens, and high-protein marine feeds, and they are sensitive to rough handling during grading and transport. Farms, public aquariums, and researchers usually value traceability because it supports biosecurity, genetic planning, and meaningful comparison between production batches.
