Mixed Strain
Mixed strain cobia refers to Rachycentron canadum stock produced from more than one broodstock population, hatchery line, or selection group. In aquaculture, the term is about genetics and production history rather than an ornamental color breed. Normal cobia are large, fast-growing marine fish with brown to gray bodies, a pale underside, and a dark lateral stripe; color words such as albino or piebald would describe unusual individuals, not established strains unless a program has documented them.
Farms may use mixed-strain cobia to broaden genetic diversity or compare growth, survival, and feed conversion across family lines. The tradeoff is that performance data can be harder to interpret if parentage is not tracked. Management belongs in professional marine systems. Warm, high-oxygen water and strong biosecurity are central, and juveniles are often graded as they grow. Formulated feeds must suit a carnivorous fish. Cobia are not practical household aquarium animals, though public aquariums and research facilities may hold them under permit.
