Mixed Variety
Mixed variety is a practical label for ocellaris clownfish, Amphiprion ocellaris, when the fish or group is not being kept under one named morph. It may include wild-type orange ocellaris, black Darwin ocellaris, snowflake, naked, midnight, platinum, or offspring from designer pairings that do not fit a hatchery name. In the broader aquarium trade, percula and maroon clownfish terms sometimes appear beside ocellaris morph names, so scientific name and parentage matter if identification or breeding value is important.
Care follows the needs of captive-bred ocellaris rather than the marketing label. They need stable warm saltwater and mature biological filtration, and most accept a mix of prepared and frozen marine foods. A bonded pair needs enough territory, even though the species is usually less aggressive than larger clownfish. An anemone is optional and can add risk in new tanks. For breeding, mixed-variety fish can produce attractive patterns, but results are less predictable and offspring are best described honestly rather than forced into a named designer category.
