Unknown Breed
Unknown breed is a listing term for a California quail whose captive line, subspecies background, or color variety has not been identified. Many such birds are simply wild-type Callipepla californica, the familiar western North American quail with a comma-shaped head plume, rounded body, and strong covey instincts. Others may come from aviary lines carrying white, silver, fawn, or dove coloration without a clear breeding history.
The label is most useful as a reminder to verify the species and manage the bird conservatively. California quail need secure outdoor or indoor aviary space, protection from predators, and places to hide when startled. They are social but can be territorial during the breeding season, so group makeup matters. Prospective keepers should check local requirements for gamebirds, and unknown-line birds are best kept out of conservation, research, or release projects.
