Mixed Breed

Mixed breed California quail usually means a captive quail whose exact strain, locality, or color-line history is not known. The wording can be misleading, because California quail, Callipepla californica, are a wild species rather than a domestic bird divided into standardized breeds. In aviaries they may be kept in wild-type plumage or in selected color variants such as dove, fawn, silver, and white.

For keepers, mixed ancestry mainly affects recordkeeping and breeding plans, not daily care. These quail do best in ground-oriented aviaries with brushy cover, dust-bathing areas, and enough space for pairs or small coveys to avoid constant chasing. Chicks require careful brooder management and a suitable gamebird starter. Local rules may affect possession or sale, and captive mixed-breed quail should not be used for release programs or mixed with wild birds.

Colors: Dove, Fawn, Silver, White, Wild‑Type
