Unknown Strain
When a black soldier fly colony is listed as unknown strain, its ancestry or source can no longer be verified. It may be wild-collected, bought as feeder larvae, inherited from another grower, or maintained for years without notes. Most will look like ordinary wild-type Hermetia illucens: cream to tan larvae, darker prepupae that leave the feed, and black adult flies that live mainly to mate and lay eggs.
Unknown-strain colonies can still be useful for compost bins and small livestock or reptile feed programs, but they should be treated as unproven stock. Start with modest expectations, observe survival and growth on the intended feed, and avoid mixing them into selected commercial lines unless that is the plan. Hygiene, temperature, substrate depth, and protection from mites or ants will influence success far more than a missing strain label.
