Unclassified Strain
An unclassified strain black soldier fly is Hermetia illucens kept or sold without a named production line, geographic origin, or selected trait designation. The term may apply to a backyard compost colony, a research batch, or feeder larvae from a supplier that has not identified the culture. Adults are wasp-like black flies, while the important stage for most keepers is the pale larva that grows quickly on organic material.
Management depends more on colony performance than the strain name. Producers monitor how fast larvae convert feed, how evenly they size up, and how many pupae return as breeding adults. For home systems, odor control, drainage, and escape-proof collection are more important than color. Farms and laboratories usually keep unclassified cultures separate from selected lines so results and productivity claims are not confused.
