Mixed Strain

A mixed strain black soldier fly culture contains Hermetia illucens from more than one source or from a colony whose lines have been blended over time. It is not a formal breed name; it describes a working population of a fly now cultured worldwide for larvae. Within one culture, growth rate, larval size, and timing of prepupal migration can vary. Cream or tan larvae darken to brown prepupae before becoming black, non-biting adults.

Mixed strains are common in composting, poultry feed, reptile feed, aquaculture, and waste-reduction systems because managers often select for reliability rather than appearance. Good colony records help track feedstock response, emergence rate, and any outside introductions. Housing needs focus on warm temperatures, controlled moisture, ventilation, secure larval collection, and clean separation between food-waste processing and any larvae intended for animal feed, since local feed rules may apply.

Colors: Adult, Black, Brown, Cream, Larva, Prepupa, Tan, White, Wild Type
