Mixed Breed
Mixed breed American bison is a plain-language label for a bison whose background is not being presented as a single verified line. It may overlap with grade, crossbred, or commercially sourced bison, depending on how a herd uses its records. The animal is still managed as American bison, Bison bison, with the size, herd instincts, seasonal coat, and powerful front end that make the species distinct from domestic cattle, even when ancestry details are incomplete.
The label is most useful when it keeps expectations honest. A mixed breed bison may fit a production herd, an educational setting, or a private ranch, but it should not be represented as conservation stock without stronger documentation. Practical management is the same serious work required for other bison: secure fencing, experienced handlers, careful chute design, room to move as a herd, and forage plans that account for seasonal demand. Breeding decisions should consider the limits of the record as well as the animal in front of the owner.
