Congo
The Congo African grey is the larger, red-tailed form most people picture when they hear African grey parrot. Associated with Psittacus erithacus, it has a pale gray body, scalloped feathering, bright red tail, strong black beak, and a reputation for precise vocal learning. It differs from the smaller, darker Timneh form, which has a maroon tail and horn-colored upper beak and is often treated separately by modern authorities.
Congo African greys need serious long-term planning. They are intelligent, sensitive parrots that require spacious housing, daily social time, foraging, bathing, flight or exercise, and a stable routine. Feather damaging behavior, fear responses, and stress-related problems can appear when birds are bored or poorly socialized. Breeders and adopters should pay close attention to age, source, diet history, band or microchip information, and temperament rather than choosing only for talking ability.
