About Promised Land Animal Sanctuary

Founded in 2017, we are a vegan animal sanctuary in rural Ontario. Our work is rooted in the lifelong rescue and care of farmed and domestic animals who have been neglected, abandoned, or otherwise failed by systems that view them as commodities rather than sentient beings. But the sanctuary is not only a place of refuge for animals. It has become a space where people come to reconnect, with themselves, with nature and with a more compassionate way of being in the world. The community we serve is layered. On the surface, it includes the animals themselves, many of whom arrive with physical and emotional trauma and who require consistent, attentive and often complex care. Beneath that, it includes the humans who find their way here: individuals seeking healing, children learning empathy, volunteers wanting to contribute to something meaningful, and those navigating grief, burnout, or disconnection. Through programs like equine-assisted therapy, youth workshops, and partnerships with victim services supporting individuals escaping domestic violence, the sanctuary acts as a bridge between care for animals and care for people. It is a place where nervous systems soften, where trust is rebuilt slowly, and where compassion is practiced, not just spoken about. As an ethically vegan sanctuary, our work also carries an advocacy component. We aim to gently challenge dominant narratives around animals and invite a shift toward more ethical and sustainable ways of living. This is not done through force, but through relationship, storytelling and direct experience. At its core, this work is an ongoing act of service, holding space for lives that are often overlooked, and creating an environment where both animals and humans can be met with dignity, patience and respect. It is physical, emotional and deeply relational work, grounded in the belief that how we treat the most vulnerable among us reflects who we are, and who we are becoming.
