Fantine

Fantine was the first mini donkey we welcomed to our farm, and she's been a steady companion and friend to us and her fellow donkeys. She is incredibly gentle and friendly with our kids and all other visitors.

She came already bred back and with a weanling foal, and she has been an amazing mom to all three of these little ones, including her latest Eponine.

We think she is a semi-wooly due to the way her mane falls over to the side and the longer coat she keeps for much of the year. She lives on pasture with our highland cattle.

She has had her teeth floated a couple of times with us as she tends to collect a bit of grass/hay in her cheeks, kind of like a hamster. My equine vet colleagues have not identified anything wrong anatomically or pathologically.

Her hooves grow a little bit more quickly than most of the rest of our donkeys, and they weren't in great shape when we first received her. Thanks to the care attention from our expert donkey farrier, they are back to normal now.

She is welcome to stay on with indefinite boarding on our farm if you'd like your own friendly mini donkey but don't have a place to keep her.

Service Description
Your donkey will live with our own herd of miniature donkeys and highland cattle on our farm on the edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Nelson County, Virginia.

The animals have access to several covered barn spaces as well as thick wooded areas for protection from severe weather.

The historic farmhouse is available as a vacation rental, and there are also many other places to stay nearby, including Wintergreen ski resort.

Boarding Service Terms & Facility Rules

We try to maintain numbers so that the natural pasture provides plenty of nutrition through the spring, summer, and fall, with local hay fed through the winter months and as needed otherwise. We provide minerals and salt.

Although I'm a veterinarian, I maintain a relationship with a local equine veterinary practice for most services and to always have someone available in case of emergency. Veterinary and farrier expenses are additional but will be grouped with our own donkeys to save on costs.

We do not live on the property but have an immediate neighbor who is checking on the animals most days. I am also out there to check on them several days each week.

This boarding service includes unlimited unsupervised over-the-fence visits from the public access road, and up to one accompanied visit per quarter.
All services are governed by the Creatures Standard Boarding Agreement (Terms §21).
