Yoke S Ranch

Yoke S Ranch raises corriente cattle in Russell, Iowa, a small farming community in south-central Iowa about 65 miles southeast of Des Moines. Rick and Kathy Schultz, along with their son Marshal, run the operation as a family-owned and family-operated ranch.

The herd got its start when Marshal returned home from Oklahoma Panhandle State University, where he had attended on a rodeo scholarship, and the family purchased a few corriente to raise practice calves for roping. Over time, the operation grew to more than 100 cows, with an additional 150 head of competition cattle, including animals leased to team ropers across the Midwest. When those leased cattle return, many go on to compete in charreada events in Iowa.

Corriente cattle for sale in Iowa are uncommon, and Yoke S Ranch runs one of the largest herds of this breed in the state. The cattle are never confined to a feedlot; the gate stays open and pasture access is available at all times. The ranch vaccinates the herd once a year and relies on the breed's natural hardiness to minimize doctoring, reporting that over a thousand calves have been born on the property without a single assisted delivery.
