Windward Portuguese Water Dogs

Windward Portuguese Water Dogs has been breeding Portuguese water dogs in Akron, Ohio since 1987, when Christie Kello's mother, Robin, founded the program. The kennel has roots in northeast Ohio, roughly 40 miles south of Cleveland, and spans three generations of the same family.

Over more than three decades, dogs carrying the Windward name have earned multiple Best in Show, High in Trial, and multi-title honors. Breeding stock is AKC-registered, and complete health testing is performed on all parents, with records and pedigree copies provided to every puppy family. Individual dogs are tested for conditions including GM1, prcd-PRA, improper coat, EOPRA, micropthalmia, JDCM, and CDDY/CDPA, reflecting a thorough approach to genetic screening that Portuguese water dog buyers in Ohio are increasingly looking for.

Litters are raised in the home's living room under the Puppy Culture protocol, giving puppies daily hands-on exposure to household sights, sounds, and people of varying ages from the start. By ten weeks, each puppy has been bathed and groomed multiple times, received two rounds of vaccinations, and been examined by a canine ophthalmologist when scheduling allows. Companion puppies are placed on spay/neuter contracts, while show prospects go to co-ownership arrangements, and the program typically produces one to two litters per year.
