Westwind GSPs has been breeding german shorthaired pointers out of Garden Plain, Kansas for over 30 years, with Gary Hutchison at the helm of a program built squarely around the working foot hunter. Garden Plain sits in the south-central Kansas plains, roughly 20 miles west of Wichita, putting the kennel in prime upland bird country.

The program's focus is on producing versatile field dogs suited to walk-up hunting rather than horseback field trials, with an emphasis on natural bird-finding ability, trainability, and a settled temperament at home. Pedigrees trace back to foundational European lines including Wasserschling, Wildburg, and Greif, along with the Hillhaven line, which Westwind has worked carefully into its own gene pool over the decades. The kennel has also preserved frozen semen from select dogs to retain access to proven genetics no longer otherwise available.
