Wedel Red Angus

Wedel Red Angus, owned and operated by Frank and Susan Wedel, raises registered red Angus cattle on the shortgrass plains of western Kansas, just outside Leoti — roughly an hour east of the Colorado border and about 90 miles northwest of Dodge City.

The Wedels came to seedstock production through firsthand experience in both cattle feeding and commercial cow-calf operations, and their program reflects more than 25 years of multi-trait selection focused squarely on commercial profitability. The herd consists of more than 500 red Angus and red Angus hybrid females managed in large contemporary groups, with stringent standards governing which females enter and remain in the cowherd.

A defining feature of the program is its emphasis on feed efficiency. In 2015, Wedel Red Angus invested in a GrowSafe system to measure individual feed intake, allowing the operation to identify and remove low-performing cattle before they ever reach a customer's pasture. That data feeds directly into the Red Angus Association of America database, supporting the breed-wide EPD system. The program's focus on carcass merit, calving ease, and feedyard performance earned the Wedels the RAAA Breeder of the Year Award in 2018.
