Sugar Bay Cotons

Sugar Bay Cotons, run by Beverly Kohler in Olympia, Washington, has focused exclusively on the Coton de Tulear since 2001, making it one of the longer-running Coton de tulear programs in the Pacific Northwest. Olympia sits about 60 miles south of Seattle, in the southern Puget Sound region.

Beverly's program is rooted in conformation showing and has produced a line of dogs with a notable show record. The kennel's foundation dogs trace back to two individuals, Oscar and Ziggy, and the family built from that pair has remained consistent across subsequent generations. Among the standout dogs from this line, Sugar Bay's Cate Blanchett became the first female Coton de tulear to win Best in Show in AKC competition, and Sugar Bay's Dotted Swiss earned the title of World Winner in both 2022 and 2023, along with a Best of Breed win at Westminster in 2021.

Beverly is a longtime member of the United States Coton de Tulear Club, has served on the breed standard committee, and contributed to writing the AKC breed standard for the Coton. She is also a member of the Gig Harbor Kennel Club. Health testing is a consistent part of the program, with records publicly accessible through the OFA database under the Sugar Bay Cotons name. All dogs live in the house, and Beverly approaches breeding with a focus on breed standard, temperament, structure, and movement — using the show ring as a measure of how the program is progressing.
