Songwood Haven Farm

Songwood Haven Farm is a Dexter cattle breeder in East Bernstadt, Kentucky, in Laurel County and Appalachia near Lexington. Kim Newswanger has raised Dexters for over a decade, participates in the American Dexter Cattle Association, and keeps detailed records of each animal’s health history. All adults receive annual veterinary exams, parasite control and mineral balancing tailored to Dexters before breeding.

The herd grazes on rotational pasture and receives individual attention from foal to maturity, with an emphasis on calm temperaments and social handling. Calving season is managed in sheltered paddocks where mothers and calves stay together for at least three months to support healthy growth.

Most cattle live in small family groups on well-drained fields bordered by woodlands, which supports natural foraging and herd health. Many breeding animals trace to foundation herds recorded in early American Dexter registers. Owners note the breed’s efficiency and longevity under varied weather conditions for both dairy and beef uses.
