Sioux River Retrievers

Sioux River Retrievers raises Labrador retrievers on rural acreage in Hawarden, Iowa, in the northwest corner of the state near Sioux City. Kevin Foster founded the program with roots stretching back to 1991, when his first AKC-registered Lab became the beloved companion of a youth camp he directed in southwest Wisconsin.

The program is built around pedigree study and intentional pairing. Breeding adults are drawn from well-regarded lines — including connections to show champions and field title holders — with the goal of producing dogs that reflect the full Labrador retriever standard: sound conformation, retrieving drive, and steady, home-friendly temperaments. Litters may lean toward bench type, field type, or a blend of both depending on the foundation being developed. All breeding dogs undergo the laboratory and genetic health testing recommended for the breed, and no pairing goes forward that could produce a puppy carrying a genetic disorder common to Labs. A health warranty covers each puppy through 26 months of age against hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and other genetic conditions typical to the breed.

Beyond the kennel itself, Sioux River Retrievers is connected to Jack and Company, a nonprofit Kevin co-founded to support individuals with intellectual and developmental differences. A portion of proceeds from puppy placements helps fund therapy and service dog placements through that organization.
