Royal Kennels

Royal Kennels, owned by Bob Peniston, has been raising Australian cattle dogs and Akitas on a working farm in Chillicothe, Missouri since 1988. The kennel sits on 40 acres in north Missouri, roughly an hour northeast of Kansas City, giving dogs generous space for daily exercise alongside the rhythms of an active farm operation.

As third-generation farmers, the family approaches breeding with an eye toward dogs that are sound in structure, temperament, and health. Every dog in the program is health tested before breeding, and pedigrees are researched to complement the strengths of each pairing. The kennel holds Australian cattle dogs to AKC breed standards and pursues OFA genetic testing as part of its health screening process.

Dogs and puppies live in climate-controlled kennels with indoor and outdoor runs, and the broader farm setting means plenty of room to move. Puppies are handled daily by a large family household and are socialized around children and other animals from an early age. Dogs from this program have earned titles in conformation, herding, and nose work, reflecting the range of what the Australian cattle dogs here are bred to do. Akita puppies are also bred at Royal Kennels for those seeking that breed alongside an ACD.
