Rancho Puerto De Nieto
Rancho Puerto de Nieto raises belted Galloway cattle in Aguascalientes, Mexico, a city in the central highlands roughly 500 kilometers northwest of Mexico City. Now run by Jose Lopez, the operation traces its roots back more than 90 years to when patriarch Don Camilo López Muñoz acquired a section of the historic ex-hacienda of San Miguel de Venadero with the goal of improving regional cattle genetics. Four generations of the López family have since carried that mission forward on the same land.
The ranch is a member of the Belted Galloway Society and maintains a herd of more than 40 belted Galloway cattle alongside a larger Hereford operation. Situated at an elevation of approximately 6,400 feet, the property sits at the geographic center of Mexico, giving it a temperate highland climate well suited to cattle production. The program relies on an active artificial insemination and embryo transfer regimen, with selection focused on measurable production traits. Rancho Puerto de Nieto was visited by a Kansas Department of Agriculture trade mission in 2021 as part of a broader effort to explore beef genetics collaboration between Kansas and Mexican producers.
