The farm is owned and operated by Jim Shaw, Barb Bernardi, and Bruce Bernardi, who got their start in 2011 after attending a National Alpaca Days event at a local Illinois farm.

The herd has been built by sourcing breeding stock from established North American farms, including Majestic Meadows and Crescent Moon. Prairie Rose participates in AOA certified alpaca shows and attends industry seminars to stay current with breeding standards. Barb is also a certified fiber sorter, adding a hands-on fiber expertise to the operation.

The farm's sires, including Crescent Moon's Borromeo and Majestic Peruvian Diego, are selected for dense fiber, strong crimp, and the ability to maintain those traits over time.
