Pootcorners

Pootcorners has been raising alpacas in Palmerston, Ontario since 2004, when Peter and Suelaine Poot purchased their first two bred females. The farm sits on 24 acres in Wellington County, roughly an hour northwest of Guelph, and now carries a herd of more than 50 animals.

Both suri and huacaya alpacas are represented on the property, with a range of natural fleece colours spanning off-white, fawn, caramel, brown, grey, and black. What sets this operation apart from most alpaca farms in Ontario is its commitment to a no-waste model: the herd is raised for both fibre and meat, and natural-coloured hides are processed through a local tannery rather than discarded. Suelaine Poot is a certified fibre classer, and the farm has collaborated with Toronto-based designers to produce finished garments from its own clip.

Anyone searching for alpacas for sale in Ontario will find that the farm holds membership with Alpaca Ontario, where Suelaine has helped organize the Spring Show and contributed to the Fibre Initiative Committee since 2006. Several of the Poot children have grown up involved in the herd and now run their own farms or continue to work at Pootcorners.
