Northern Prairie Alpacas, LLC raises alpacas in Sullivan, Missouri, a small farm situated in the Ozark highlands of Franklin County, roughly an hour southwest of St. Louis. Owner Deb Wellinghoff started the operation in North Dakota in 2009 after years of researching fiber animals, then relocated to Missouri in 2011 to be closer to family. The herd includes both huacaya and suri alpacas, with breeding decisions guided by fiber quality, sound conformation, and temperament.

The farm runs at a deliberately small scale, which allows each animal to receive consistent individual handling and socialization. Breeding goals center on quality fleece and disposition, with those traits weighed together when selecting animals for the program. Every pound of fleece sheared each spring is put to use on the property. The finest fiber is spun into yarn for hand-woven scarves; the remainder goes into felted goods and other fiber products made by Deb and her sister. That farm-to-finished-product cycle, captured in the farm's own phrase "Fresh from the Farm," reflects how tightly the breeding and fiber sides of the operation are connected.
