Mountain Top Farm

Mountain Top Farm run by Gilmer and Charlotte Childress breeds Katahdins in Haysi VA on the Appalachian Plateau near Bristol. They have been breeding Katahdin sheep for more than 15 years, hold registrations with the American Katahdin Sheep Association and maintain a flock health program featuring regular parasite control and genetic screening.

The Childresses emphasize sustainable grazing practices, rotating pastures to maintain soil health and reduce parasite loads. Their flock grazes rotationally on lush pastures, and lambs are handled daily to support calm temperaments and natural social behavior. Breeding selections balance wool quality with sturdy conformation, and offspring regularly feature in local agricultural fairs.

On-farm lambing under careful observation allows early health checks and encourages strong bonds between lambs and handlers. Their breeding lines are adapted for hot summers and cold mountain winters, reflecting traits suited to Appalachian climates. A recent customer highlighted the breed’s gentle nature and hardy performance on uneven terrain.
