Milk Creek Reds

Milk Creek Reds has been raising red Angus cattle near Plevna, Montana since 1985, making it one of the longer-running registered red Angus programs in the eastern Montana region, roughly two hours southeast of Miles City.

The operation is run by Bruce and Tena Ketchum as a 365-day cow-calf program, with cattle developed under naturally limited inputs and limited labor. Selection centers on traits the Ketchums consider economically relevant: fertility, longevity, production efficiency, feed efficiency, and fleshing ability. Convenient traits — good dispositions, functional udders, and structurally sound feet and legs — round out the selection criteria. Genetic evaluation relies on large contemporary groups of 15 to 60 progeny per sire, a method the program uses to identify genetics that perform under real-world conditions rather than controlled show settings.
