Miles Smith Farm
Miles Smith Farm raises Highland cattle on a 36-acre property in Loudon, New Hampshire, about 15 minutes north of Concord. Bruce Dawson and Carole Soule brought Scottish Highland cattle to the farm in 2002, building their herd on land that has been worked since the mid-1800s.
The farm's grazing operation extends well beyond the home acreage. To keep the herd on grass through the extended New England season, the farm leases pasture at roughly ten additional properties around the state, giving the cattle access to over 300 acres of mixed farmland. The highland cattle are rotated among these fields regularly, which allows the farm to stretch the grazing season into fall and early winter. The cattle are raised without hormones, antibiotics, or animal by-products in their feed.
Those looking for Highland cattle for sale in New Hampshire will find that Miles Smith Farm registers its animals with the American Highland Cattle Association, and the farm has also maintained a herdbook rating through the Heartland Highland Cattle Association. The herd, which has run at around 80 head, grazes on pasture with views toward Concord and is managed with a clear emphasis on grass-based, low-input husbandry.
