Melissa Awtrey raises dairy cross goats on Mason Jar Farm, an 81-acre property near Hillsboro in North Central Texas, about an hour south of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
The farm's story began in 2007 when the Awtrey family traded suburban life in Plano for a 53-acre plot in the Hill County area, later expanding their land and adding a 1926 farmhouse in 2012. Dairy crosses for sale in Texas are central to the farm's identity — the herd, which has grown to around 40 animals, originally developed out of a practical need for goat milk to make the family's homemade soap line. Each spring, kids are bottle-fed and does are hand milked daily, with the Awtrey children actively involved in the hands-on work of raising the herd. Hay equipment purchased in 2015 supports the farm's self-sufficiency, and the property also keeps chickens, pigs, rabbits, ducks, donkeys, and cattle alongside the goats.
