McLaughlin Farm raises Highland cattle in Jackson, Michigan, a property with roots going back to 1932 when John McLaughlin's grandparents first purchased the land. John and Catherine McLaughlin have been working the farm since 1980, and the herd shifted to highlands around 2000 — a breed that has remained the focus ever since.

The farm sits in south-central Michigan, roughly midway between Lansing and Ann Arbor, on approximately 130 acres bordered by the Dahlem Conservancy. The cattle are managed entirely by John and Catherine, with no outside employees. Anyone looking for Highland cattle in Michigan will find a program built on a straightforward grass-only philosophy: the animals are rotationally grazed across pastures in warmer months and fed round bales of hay through winter, living outside year-round without hormone implants, steroids, or antibiotics.

John and Catherine are active members of the American Highland Cattle Association, and John was named the organization's Member of the Year in 2010. The farm participates in the AHCA's Quality Highland Beef program and has held MAEAP environmental certification. McLaughlin Farm contributed roughly a quarter of the samples to a University of Missouri study on Highland beef conducted between 2011 and 2016 — all of which were grass-fed and grass-finished.
