Maui Alpaca

Maui Alpaca raises suri alpacas on the upcountry slopes of Haleakala in Makawao, Hawaii, one of the most distinctive settings for an alpaca farm in the United States. Janet Baldwin owns and operates the farm, which focuses on alpacas raised for their fleece and on connecting the fiber from those animals to finished products.

The herd is currently composed of suri alpacas, a type known for its long, silky fiber, and the farm has expressed interest in adding huacaya to broaden its fiber offerings over time. Alpacas for sale in Hawaii are a rarity, and Maui Alpaca represents one of the few operations raising the animals in the islands, situated in the cool upcountry region above Kahului.

Beyond the herd itself, the farm incorporates fiber arts education, including demonstrations of fleece being spun into yarn, reflecting a program oriented around the full fiber cycle rather than animal production alone.
