Macedo's Mini Acre

Macedo's Mini Acre raises alpacas in Turlock, California, in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley about 15 miles from Modesto. Larry and Maureen Macedo bring a distinctive background to the program: Maureen holds a genetics degree from UC Davis and Larry a degree in accounting from Chico State, and both have drawn on years of experience in animal nutrition from work at a major research facility.

The Macedos researched bloodlines, visited other ranches, and attended seminars before acquiring their first animals, and they have continued selecting for conformation, fiber quality, and colorful fleeces. Both huacaya and suri alpacas are part of the herd, making the ranch a source for alpaca breeders in California seeking either fiber type. Both families have deep roots in the Turlock area, spanning several generations.

Agritourism and education are a meaningful part of ranch life. Maureen has served as a 4-H camelid leader for 14 years, and the farm has hosted FFA students, school tours, and ag day events throughout the region. The ranch store carries hand-spun yarn, mini-mill yarn, and finished fiber goods, and the operation processes fiber into products including dryer balls and rug yarn — reflecting a commitment to putting every bit of fleece to practical use.
