Loonan Stock Farm
Loonan Stock Farm in Corning, Iowa has been raising beef seedstock for half a century, with the family's roots in cattle production stretching back to 1864. Dick Loonan and his daughter Judy built the operation around a straightforward goal: helping commercial producers improve the profitability of their cow herds. Today, Judy and herdsman Rick Thompson carry that work forward.
The breeding program centers on red Angus cattle, along with Red Simmental and Red Sim-Angus genetics, all marketed exclusively to commercial producers across the Midwest. Corning sits in southwest Iowa, roughly an hour south of Des Moines, giving the farm convenient reach to a wide regional customer base seeking red Angus bulls for sale in Iowa and neighboring states.
Trait selection has long emphasized calving ease, growth performance, and carcass merit — including ultrasound carcass data collected since 1993. The herd runs approximately 375 cows, with around 270 of those being red Angus, focused on calving ease and true performance lines. Bulls offered through the program are selected to be uniform, thick, and easy-fleshing, with EPDs balanced to deliver results both at weaning and in the feedlot.
