Kel Simoon Azawakh

Kel Simoon Azawakh has been producing azawakh in Sweetwater, Tennessee since 1989, making it one of the longest-running programs for this rare breed in the United States. Owner Deb Kidwell established the kennel with her first azawakh that spring, and her foundation dogs were all one generation from country-of-origin imports sourced from Mali, Niger, France, and Germany. Sweetwater sits in the foothills of the Tennessee Valley, roughly 45 minutes south of Knoxville, and the property spans three acres of fields and woodland where the dogs live as part of the household.

The program is built around a preservation-breeding philosophy, staying close to country-of-origin bloodlines to maintain the type and character found in the Sahel region. Breeding decisions prioritize temperament alongside structure, and all breeding dogs are screened for thyroid and autoimmune function, cardiac health, eye health, and DNA. Kel Simoon azawakh have earned titles across a wide range of AKC and UKC venues, including lure coursing, rally, obedience, agility, scent work, barn hunt, and canine good citizen, among others. Deb is an AKC Breeder of Merit and has presented AKC Judges Education seminars on the breed.
