Kathryn Hobby

Kathryn Hobby has been raising dairy goats in Shelbyville, Illinois, under the Hobbycroft name since the program's roots go back to 1967. The farm is located in central Illinois, roughly an hour and a half southeast of Springfield. What began with full-size dairy breeds and grade does in Michigan eventually followed the family to Illinois, where the herd has been based since 1974.

After a years-long hiatus during which the property was devoted to daylilies, the program was revived in 2008 and shifted focus to Nigerian dwarf dairy goats, with the first animals arriving in 2009. Today the herd is run as a family partnership with Kathryn's daughters, Betsy Wicker and Sue Nugent. Bloodlines in the herd trace back to established programs including Lost Valley, Fairlea Farms, Olson Acres, Jasper Pine, and Buttin' Heads.

Hobbycroft is an ADGA Plus herd, with linear appraisal beginning in 2015 and DHIR milk testing underway since 2016. All retained kids are DNA tested, and the herd is tested annually for CAE and Johnes through the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory. Does from mixed-sex quad or larger litters are also tested for freemartin status through UC Davis.
